This is a response to Silicon Valley Watcher’s article on Google Index.

What Mr. Foremski was suggesting, is that Google should open up their database of site indexes to public, thus reducing the bandwidth costs of millions of sites worldwide. All other search engines would use Google’s database combined with their own algorithms to provide users with appropriate results.

What will this result in? Let’s take a look:

1. Google will get to control the access to the indexes. They could either try form a monopoly, or they could try to relax some of their privacy issues. Either way, it will be used (I mean, who wouldn’t?) to shut down the competition. Excellent gatekeeping opportunity.
2. People will start adding extra tags in their search queries to access the indexed version. Suddenly, the cached versions of a site will be more popular than the site itself. Expect to see something like “Wikileaks GIndex” as some of the popular searches instead of “Wikileaks Wiki”. (Yes, I already gave this system a name: GIndex)
3. Heck! why even bother stored a copy of the site? Google will start providing its own cloud service or hosting options for websites. I can totally see that happening. “Host your site on google, and better your chances of getting indexed!” – Some Fancy SEO Expert.

So now you know. You heard it here first.

That would be a great add-on for Google’s Webmaster Tools. Although there do exist ways of hosting your site on google’s servers, Providing its own hosting service would be nice little cherry on top. I don’t see any reason why Google wouldn’t want to do this. It is already storing all the indexes, so why not just make it public and create a standard?

Go on, spread the word. I am pretty sure it’s already happening! Engineers must have already started working on this idea, or at least they should have! I don’t see why not, from Google’s point of view, this is taking a next big step to becoming the internet overlord.
